Anchors

Anchor in brief

The primary function of an anchor is to secure a vessel in place, counteracting the forces of wind and currents, rather than bearing the vessel’s entire weight. Anchors engage with the seabed, assisted by the weight of the anchor chain, which helps maintain their position. The anchor prevents the chain from sliding, while the chain’s weight keeps the anchor pressed down, enhancing its grip.

When an anchor is deployed, it should rest on the bottom, correctly orient itself, and embed in the ground. Key parameters for an anchor include holding force, size, and ease of storage. Higher holding force allows for a less bulky anchor. A general guideline for anchor weight is 1 kg per 100 kg of the boat’s displacement.

Main types of anchors.

There are many types of anchors. But we will consider only the most popular and demanded ones, and also learn how to use them correctly.

Mushroom Anchor

Дизайн-без-названия-on-gaelixmarineservice.com

Simple and compact the Mushroom anchor is one of the most popular options for inflatable boats. It takes up little space in the boat and has no moving parts. Often such anchors are covered with polymer paint, which protects the anchor from corrosion, and the boat hull from friction and scratches in contact with it.

The Mushroom anchor does not adhere well to rocky bottom and is not suitable for bodies of water with fast currents.
