Liferafts come in capacities ranging from a minimum of 6 to usually up to 35 people. On passenger ships, rafts can accommodate up to 150 people.

Дизайн-без-названия-on-gaelixmarineservice.com

The number of rafts is calculated to ensure the total capacity on each side can accommodate 150% of the total number of people on board.

 Additional Liferaft Requirements

On vessels where the distance from the bow or stern to the nearest raft exceeds 100 meters, an additional raft must be installed. At least 2 lifejackets and 2 immersion suits must be kept nearby, along with boarding gear on each side (boarding ramps on high-sided vessels and rescue pendants with musings on low-sided vessels).

Methods of Deployment

Liferafts are categorized by their deployment method: mechanically launched (using davits) and manually dropped. Launch rafts are typically installed on passenger ships, allowing boarding at deck level, which is advantageous for rescuing passengers in varying physical and mental conditions.

Inflatable Liferafts

Inflatable rafts are favored for their compactness. The primary elements of a liferaft include:

  • Buoyancy Chamber: Ensures the raft’s buoyancy.
  • Bottom: A waterproof layer providing insulation from cold water.
  • Tent: A waterproof cover that insulates against heat and cold.

The buoyancy chamber consists of at least two independent compartments, ensuring that if one compartment is damaged, the remaining compartments can maintain positive freeboard and keep the required number of people and supplies afloat. These compartments are typically arranged in rings one above the other, preserving space for occupants even if one compartment is compromised.

Special valves are installed for manual inflation to maintain pressure in the compartments. Thermal insulation under the tent is achieved with a two-layer waterproof material with an air gap. The tent’s exterior is bright orange for visibility.

Awning and Supports

The tent is supported by arch-type frames that inflate automatically with the buoyancy chamber. The tent’s height is designed so occupants can sit comfortably anywhere within the raft.
