WHY ANODES ON YOUR SHIP?
All metallic components, such as screw, shaft and rudder can be affected under water. There is no metal that is completely immune to galvanic corrosion. Even the metals that are normally corrosion free, are composed of various metals. This combination causes corrosion. A protection by means of anodes is a "sacrificial protection system" because the anode sacrifices itself slowly. An anode that is not sacrificed, does not work!
LIFESPAN OF ANODES
The anode lifespan is dependent on many factors, such as the anode alloy, sailing area, paint damage, screw type, etc. Replacement is recommended once 70-80% of the anode is used.
SELECTING THE RIGHT ANODE
A ship can sail many different waters, but as a global rule of thumb for picking the right anode, you should assume the water that the ship is sailing in the most. For the different types of water there are different types of anodes that give the best galvanic protection.
ZINC ANODES: SALT WATER
ALUMINIUM ANODES: FRESH AND BRACKISH WATER
MAGNESIUM ANODES: FRESH WATER
